Natural gas would not be able to sufficiently replace coal should Germany opt for an exit from coal-fired power generation in the short term, utility RWE's chief financial officer, Markus Krebber, said. Coal-fired electricity generation will continuously decline in the coming years and RWE plans to "nearly halve" its lignite generation before the end of the next decade, Krebber said. But if the coal phase-out is accelerated "arbitrarily and drastically", such as through a "politically mandated exit from coal", this could "have severe consequences", he said.
