Leakage of electrolytes and some organic metabolites from leaves was studied in B. juncea cultivars resistant (RC781) and susceptible (Varuna) to A. brassicae. Fifty-day-old plants were inoculated with a spray suspension in a pot experiment. Leaveswere cut into 2 pieces at different post-inoculation stages, shaken in deionised water and the filtrate analysed. Infection by the pathogen affected the composition of leaf leachates differently in the 2 cultivars. Electrical conductivity of leachates ofVaruna increased significantly up to 3 days after inoculation, whereas it remained unchanged in RC781. The decrease in sugars and phenolic compounds after inoculation was greater in Varuna than in RC781.
