CAMEROON'S COTTON SECTOR

Commercial cotton production was introduced m the north of Cameroon in 1951 under the Compagnie fran9aise pour le developpement des fibres textiles (French Company for the Development of Textile Fibers, or CFDT). The CFDT developed this cash crop during the following two decades and introduced it in almost all the villages of the two northern provinces. In 1974, the CFDT-Cameroon was nationalized and became the Society for the Development of Cotton in Cameroon (Sodecoton). Today, Sodecoton is still a mixed-capital company: 59% is owned by the Cameroonian government, 30% by Dagris (ex-CFDT) and 11% by a private Cameroonian company. Further privatization has not occurred.
