1972 was the beginning of the end of the Vietnam war, but the human cost that year was still catastrophic. Twice a week, military transports would arrive at huge US mainland naval hospitals like the 1900-bed facility at Portsmouth on the coast of Virginia, delivering injured casualties of the conflict to the waiting ranks of military surgeons. Also arriving at Portsmouth thatyearwas a 26-year-old surgical intern called C William Schwab (better known as Bill), and his experiences of tending to the wounded of one of the 20th century's most traumatic conflicts would change his life forever.
