Mansfield, or "Mansfailed" as coined by some of its locals, lies steeped in history in the Nottinghamshire county of England. In the famously controversial Lady Chatterky's Lover, D H Lawrence portrayed Mansfield as "that once romantic now utterly disheartening colliery town". Today, largely quiet and sleepy from the echoes of its coal mining decline, there remains a sobering void of touristic charms. However, what Mansfield lacks in wayfaring wonderment, it more than makes up for in deprivation statistics. Twice voted as one of the worst places to live in Britain on national television in recent years, it also scores a host of alarming percentages in poor education, crime rates, poverty, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, substance misuse, long-term illnesses, and more. Yet from this hollow of disadvantage, some of our greatest Olympians have arisen.
