Shift-workers, airline crew, tourists, football teams, and many others will welcome the results of Shantha Rajaratnam and colleagues' study in The Lancet today,in which the investigators examined the effects of the melatonin analogue tasimelteon on transient insomnia after phase-shifts of the sleep-wake cycle. Their findings show that, like melatonin, melatonin analogues-largely because of their regulatory effects on the circadian system-can be highly effective for treating the range of symptoms that accompany transmeridian air-travel or shift-work as well as other circadian-rhythm sleep disorders.
