Last year, The Lancet reported that artemisinin-resistant falciparum malaria had been detected on the Thai-Cambodian border. This news is worrying because WHO recommends artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) for frontline treatment of uncomplicated and severe falciparum malaria and there are no new drugs in the pipeline to replace artemisinin derivatives inthe near future. Work is underway to try to stop the emergence and spread of drug resistance and, on March 9, WHO released new guidelines for malaria treatment that will aid this effort.
