On Jan 1, 2010, the manufacture of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) for all uses worldwide is due to stop. Are we still on schedule for final phase-out? Stratospheric ozone protects us from the damaging effects of ultraviolet B.1 In 1974, Molina and Rowland proposed the landmark hypothesis (much derided at the time by the chemical industry) that stratospheric ozone would be broken down by stable man-made CFCs.
