The health consequences associated with fluctuations in the level of business activity in society have been investigated for some years, with mixed results. In The Lancet today, David Stuckler and colleagues1 show that, across 26 European Union countries, rapid and large increases in unemployment were associated with a significant increase in suicide rates. The effect was stronger in countries with low spending on active labour-market programmes, and null or reversed in countries with high spending.
