Jing Chen and colleagues (March 7, p 829), in their dietary intervention study, mention an interesting relation between metabolic syndrome and blood pressure response to sodium intake. We believe that some concerns should be addressed to avoid weakening the strength of this message. First, the study excludes patients with stage 2 and stage 3 hypertension; this population comprises a large proportion of those with metabolic syndrome. After the exclusion of patients with stage 2 or 3 hypertension and diabetes, is it enough to reveal the real relation between metabolic syndrome and blood pressure response to sodium intake?
