Government Measures Aim At Boosting Production

Government direct intervention in cotton production and marketing has been minimized in line with the adopted free market orientation. The government, however, still retains the right for corrective and directive measure utilizing fiscal and monetarypolicies. In this respect, three important measures have been enacted by the government. These are: to boost production in cotton rainfed areas, the farmers in this sector were allowed to retain 50% in foreign currency out of the total proceeds from selling their output. They are by virtue of this degree released from central bank's rigid restriction in utilizing their foreign earnings. Now they are in a better position in providing inputs needed for their agricultural operations.
