Since its Independence in August, 1947, Pakistan has made remarkable progress in the field of cotton production, consumption and exports. Production jumped up from 1.1 million bales (each bale of 375 lbs.) in 1947-48 to 12.8 million bales in 1991-92which is the highest level ever recorded in the history of Pakistan. During 1999-2000, the production of cotton is expected to exceed 10.0 million bales, thereby meeting the full requirements of the domestic textile industry and providing an adequate surplus for export. With the expansion of the domestic cotton textile industry, the mill consumption of cotton continues to increase year after year. Mill consumption has gone up from 75,000 bales in 1947-48 to 8.5 million bales in 1998-99 and is expected to increase further in the coming years.
