Textiles Driving Cotton Imports And Production In Turkey

Depressed world and domestic cotton prices have negatively affected farmers planting decisions in Turkey and caused a gradual decline in planted area during recent years. Total planted area for the 2004/05 season appeared to be less than that of the previous season. This has been mainly due to growers switching to other crops. For the Aegean region, the main alternative crop was maize, while in the Chukurova region it was both maize and soybeans. The amount of decrease in cotton planted area, in comparison to the previous year's value, was approximately 18%.
