London—DONG Energy’s future as an oil and gas exploration and production company now hangs in the balance, with the one very distinct possibility having emerged that the Danish energy group could spin off its North Sea assets to a rival. DONG, a state-run company set up in 1972 to develop gas and oil in the Danish sector of the North Sea, has spent vast sums in recent years building more offshore wind farms than any other company worldwide.
