Japan buys more LNG in June, first from PNG

Tokyo—Japan imported 6.8 million mt LNG in June, up 6% year on year and 5% from May, with the first two cargoes from the new Exxon Mobil-led Papua New Guinea LNG facility among the month’s arrivals. The 6.9 million mt/year PNG LNG project— which started up in May, six months ahead of schedule—shipped 139,940 mt LNG to Japan in June at an average cost of $759.67/mt ($14.609/MMBtu). According to Platts vessel tracking software cFlow, the Spirit of Hela docked at the Futtsu LNG terminal on June 3 and the LNG Jupiter arrived at the Higashi-Ohgishima terminal on June 15. Both terminals are owned by the Tokyo Electric Power Company which has a sales agreement with PNG LNG.
