Kiev—Ukraine began preparing for a shutdown of Russian gas supplies Friday after Gazprom promised to stand by its latest demand for Ukraine to pay off its outstanding debt by June 16. Gazprom’s “final deadline” demand came in a statement urging Ukraine to pay the $1.95 billion it owes in gas debts or be switched to a pre-payment system from Monday. Gazprom said there would be no extension to the deadline.
