Ivanhoe bets heavy on crude upgrading

Washington—Canadian oil company Ivanhoe Energy is betting that heavy oil deposits will play a vital role in meeting rising global demand in the decades to come—and is also wagering that its new application of an old technology will be the key to unlocking much of the world’s heavy oil. But the company’s biggest bet may be that it will be around long enough to see its vision succeed. The company’s most promising prospect appears to be in Ecuador, where it is in discussions with the government about a joint venture with a major oil company to develop a heavy oil field southeast of Quito.
