Suncor, Total upgrader project at risk

Vancouver-Canadian oil sands powerhouse Suncor Energy and joint venture partner Total have pushed their plans for an economically- challenged 200,000 b/d upgrader in Alberta to the brink of cancellation, after Suncor announced a C$1.49 billion ($1.49 billion) writedown on February 6. CEO Steve Williams said a decision will be made before the end of March on whether to "go ahead with the project as is," or to call a halt to the C$11.6 billion facility, add- ing "there is no easy way to go to a half- or quarter-sized upgrader."
