Nigeria's MEND re-emerges with Eni pipeline attack

Lagos-In a sign of renewed organized mili- tant activity in Nigeria, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said February 4 it was responsible for an attack on an oil pipeline operated by Italy's Eni, adding the attack was a signal of its readiness to resume hostilities in the oil-producing region and halt all oil production in the OPEC state. In a statement, MEND said the attack on Eni's trunk line at Brass in southern Bayelsa state was also a response to recent oil spills from facilities operated by foreign oil compa- nies into waters around the state.
