Total, ERG to close Rome refinery on overcapacity

London—The 86,000 b/d Rome refinery, operated by a joint venture of Total and Italy’s ERG, is to be shut and turned into a major logistics hub for oil product storage and handling, the plant becoming the latest casualty of overcapacity in Europe. The joint venture, TotalErg, said late last week that the “definitive shutdown” of the refinery was scheduled to take place by the end of the third quarter of 2012.
