Total begins ‘top’ kill of leaking Elgin well in North Sea

London—French oil major Total has begun the long-awaited “top kill” operation to plug its seven week-old blowout and gas leak at its Elgin field in the UK North Sea, the company said May 15. Total said it started pumping heavy mud into the well from the main support vessel via a temporary pipeline connected to the G4 wellhead. “Depending on the precise conditions inside the well, the operation itself and the subsequent observation period will last a few days before it is possible to confirm whether the operation has been fully effective,” Total said in a statement.
