UK's Gulf Keystone proves ‘significant' Kurdish find

Dubai-Shares in UK-based Gulf Keystone Petroleum soared January 5 after the compa- ny said it had proven a new "significant" oil find in the northern Iraqi region of Kurdistan. Testing of the Shaikan-3 appraisal well, close to the company's first oil find in Kurdis- tan with the Shaikan-1 well, showed oil in place estimates of 220 million-2.2 billion bar- rels. Shares jumped almost 6% in London and closed up 5.5% at GBP1.73 ($2.68)/share. The Shaikan-3 well was designed to test Cretaceous intervals in the immediate vicinity of the Shaikan-1 discovery, drilling through the entire interval and on into the Jurassic Sargelu formation.
