Moscow—The situation in the oil city of Zhanaozen in western Kazakhstan has normalized after fatal mass rioting December 16, with oil production seemingly unaffected by the unrest. Some 15 people were killed in Zhanaozen on December 16 during a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of Kazakh independence as rioters, including striking oil workers, clashed with police (ON 12/19).
