US Congress unlikely to act on energy matters before year-end

Washington-The Republican leaders of the US Congress sent a strong signal November 30 that they do not plan to take up legislation any- time soon to address BP's massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico or to extend several soon-to- expire programs designed to boost ethanol fuels and other renewable energy projects. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Representative John Boehner of Ohio, the top Republicans in the Senate and House, respec- tively, met privately with President Barack Obama November 30 to map out the legisla- tive agenda for the remainder of the lame- duck congressional session.
