Australian governments probe natural gas blast at Apache’s Varanus Island

Sydney-The Australian federal and Western Australian state governments have launched a joint inquiry into the June 2008 explosion at the Apache Energy-operated Varanus Island gas processing facility. The blast, in a pipeline, forced the closure of the processing plant, knocking out around 30% of Western Australia’s domestic gas supplies (ON 6/4/08). Partial production at the facility, which was processing around 330,000 Mcf/d at the time of the explosion, did not resume until mid-August.
