US land rig count now just under 800, may be bottoming, says industry official

Houston-The closely watched US land rig count, which has more than halved in the last eight months, appears to be bottoming out, a top onshore drilling industry expert said May 27.The count, which according to the monthly Land Rig Newsletter reached a peak around October at 2,085 working rigs, now is slightly under 800-a figure that has slowly but steadily inched up from a recent low of 774 rigs earlier this month, newsletter publisher Richard Mason said on the sidelines of Platts' Oil & Gas Shale Developer conference.
