Petrobras gets permit for new Brazil refinery

Rio de Janeiro-Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, received an environmental license to begin construction of its Carla Cama-rao refinery in the country's northeast to produce low-sulfur gasoline and diesel as well as other fuels from both heavy and light crude oil. The $191 million project will allow the 30,000 b/d refinery to produce diesel and gasoline with a maximum 50 ppm of sulfur. Sulfur combines with oxygen during fuel combustion to create sulfur dioxide, which can cause air and rain to become acidic, damaging the environment, property and human health.
