New York-Crude prices in London and New York surged August 7 after BP said it was shutting in 400,000 b/d of Alaska North Slope crude due to pipeline corrosion. West Coast refiners started to seek alternate supplies and the Department of Energy offered to "accommodate" requests for strategic reserve crude.
