Xstrata plans October copper production for Antapaccay

XSTRATA plc expected to begin initial production from its Antapaccay copper project in Peru in October, after it started commissioning on time and budget.The group's board of directors approved the US$1.47 billion project about two years ago, and work began in the September quarter of 2010.The 20-year open-pit operation will benefit from close proximity to the Tintaya open-pit mine 10km away, which is in the final stages of its operational life.Antapaccay was designed to produce 70,000t/d of ore, to be treated by a newly built concentrator. Initial production from theTintaya-Antapaccay project was expected to be 160,000t/y copper, plus by-product gold and silver.
