China may be about to up the ante in its efforts to interfere in BHP Billiton's attempt to take over Rio Tinto, according to recent press reports. When Chinese aluminium producer Chinalco bought a 9 percent stake in Rio Tinto earlier this year in a dawn share raid, it was widely seen as a co-ordinated effort by the Chinese govemment to thwart the creation of an iron ore major.
