CHILE'S COPPER MINERS SEE RED IN DEEPENING SPAT OVER TAXES

Major private-sector mining companies operating in Chile have rejected accusations that they have not been paying enough taxes, claiming they have contributed billions of dollars to the country's treasury coffers. Foreign mining companies have come under fire in recent months from a number of politicians who alleged that the miners had been using accounting tricks to avoid posting profits and therefore paying income taxes. Two congressional inquiries are probing the tax situation of foreign miners, and whether royalties should be introduced on mineral production.
