Canada's new organic aquaculture standard spurs debate in U.S.

Farmed fish may soon carry the Canadian organic label thanks to a new set of standards that country has established for aquaculture. But don't look for such a product in U.S. grocery store aisles in the near future, or ever if some in the organic food industry have their way.Canada jumped ahead of the U.S. on May 10 when the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) released a 38-page document detailing the kinds of food, feed distribution systems, housing systems, water filtration and waste removal processes that are acceptable for fish farmers who want to be able to sell their product as organic. The standards also include measurable limits on the density of housing environments that vary by species of fish as well as parameters for transportation and slaughter methods.
