FSIS officials wary of front-of-pack label claims and web sites

Officials in USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service charged with prior review of labels on meat and poultry products are wary of front-of-pack label claims and websites that make medical claims, Sally Jones, senior technical advisor in the Labeling and Program Delivery Division, told attendees at the Prime Label Federal Regulatory Conference, in Washington, D.C., last week (see also story on Page 36)."Your icon probably never should have been approved," Jones told one questioner at the conference who described an image featuring the letter L inside a circle, symbolizing a low-fat product.
