US Supreme Court orders pause on Clean Power Plan

The Clean Power Plan, President Obama’s landmark emissions reduction programme for the power sector, looked to be in jeopardy on Tuesday, as the Supreme Court ordered a stay on the Plan’s emissions performance standard until a US court has ruled on a number of legal challenges being brought against it. The rule, brought into force in December 2015, stipulates stringent emissions performance standards for existing power stations, which will make many coal-fired power stations uneconomic to operate.
