Italy's Eni on Thursday reported a sharp drop in its second-quarter earnings, which were by hit by continuing weak demand for gas, fuels and chemicals, losses at its Saipem engineering unit and production problems in Libya and Nigeria. Adjusted net profit for the period, excluding exceptional items and also inventory valuations shifts in the downstream, was ?576 million ($764 million), down 55.3% from the second quarter of 2012.
