Gazprom Posts Strong Q1 Results, Ramps Up Lithuanian Gas Battle

Russia's Gazprom said Tuesday that its consolidated net profit in the first quarter of 2011 rose 42%, thanks to strong natural gas sales and soaring prices both at home and in Europe. Total net profit under unaudited International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRs) was 478.50 billion rubles ($16.6 billion), up from 336.85 billion rubles a year earlier - and well above the consensus forecast. Net profit attributable to shareholders rose 44% to 467.97 billion rubles.
