Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan survived a no-confidence vote on Thursday brought by lawmakers critical of his handling of the nuclear crisis that followed the Mar. 11 earthquake and tsunami. Ahead of the vote, Kan told members of his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) he would step down once the nuclear crisis was under control and a second supplementary budget passed. The embattled prime minister could hang on to power until the autumn.
