Producers of Scotch whisky are hoping their latest renewable energy initiative will raise a glass or two. On Tuesday, construction was due to begin on a $97 million combined heat and power plant at Rothes in Scotland that will use distillery byproducts to generate electricity, produce animal feed and cut carbon emissions. It will have the capacity to generate 7.2 MW of electricity -enough to power 9,000 homes -mostly for export into the national grid, and is being built by Helius CoRDe, which groups Rothes Distillers, Helius Energy and Dutch fund Rabo Project Equity.
