Total reported a sharp fall in first-quarter profits on Wednesday, but still did better than European rivals BP and Royal Dutch Shell. The French oil giant saw net income fall by 36% to ?2.29 billion ($3.06 billion) in the first three months of the year on overall sales of ?30.04 billion, 32% down on a year earlier. Adjusted net income, excluding nonrecurring items, slid 35% to ?2.11 billion.
