Maryland defines beneficial uses of coal ash

The Maryland Department of the Environment has defined the allowable beneficial uses of coal combustion byproducts (CCBs), giving state industries regulatory certainty on coal ash management that is pending at the federal level. The department established rules for the safe uses of CCBs to ensure that “reuse is protective of public health and the environment and generators of CCBs will be encouraged to reuse these materials rather than disposing of them,” the draft regulation said.
