The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) says that a mushroom modified with the gene- editing tool CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)-Cas9 is not subject to federal biotechnology regulation and can be commercialised. The genetically modified white button mushroom, created by US Penn State University scientist Dr Yinong Yang not to brown, is the first CRISPR-modified crop to gain approval from the APHIS.
