摘要

In a pilot project, the chance of maintaining plant genetic resources by commercial utilization of old varieties in the region of Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany is examined. Lactuca sativa was chosen as a model plant because relative to other crops it is easy to grow and there is a huge number of old varieties available from gene banks. In preliminary field trials, we examined 57 varieties and identified several attractive candidates. In 2007 in co-operation with nine market gardens 18 old varieties for field performance and marketing success were tested. Generally, yield was acceptable for market purposes. Marketing success was good in the City of Berlin but poor in the country side of Brandenburg. Customers who prefer organic food showed sympathy for the idea of supporting agro-biodiversity and are a promising target group for the pilot project. The propagation and maintenance breeding of successfully evaluated varieties should be delegated to more sites by stimulating participative breeding work.
