Doubling Up--Randgold profit doubles, output climbs

London- and Nasdaq-listed Randgold Resources doubled its first-quarter profit and increased its production 19% year-on-year, despite the political upheaval in Mali. Profit increased to $104-million year-on-year, while output climbed to 165 443 oz. However, profit and production were down by 28% and 13%, respectively, on the previous quarter's record results. Randgold's flagship Loulo mine, as well as its Gounkoto operations, in Mali, experienced an 18% combined quarter-on-quarter drop in production as a result of reduced average grade of the ore mined, which was partially offset by an increase in tons milled and recoveries, said CEO Mark Bristow.
