Transmission characteristics of power line considering high-speed PLC and its immunity characteristics

As the demand for home network is increasing, power-line communication (PLC) with high-speed is paid attention for the home network in recent year, because new wire installation is unnecessary. Generally power-line is not used as a communication channel and many electric appliances that generate various electromagnetic noises, are connected to the common power-line. Thus it has not been clear what extent power-line communication is possible under such conditions. In this paper, the impedance of power-line channels and household appliances, noises from the appliances, and immunity characteristic for the system are investigated from 0.1 MHz to 40 MHz. As a result, the insertion loss of VVF cable which is widely used for indoor power-line in Japan, larger than that of LAN cable. The noises from electric appliances decrease in proportion to frequency. The average value of input line impedance is about 100 Ω and LCL is more than 20dB over 1MHz. Moreover, the investigation shows that wideband noise affects the high-speed PLC system compared to narrowband noise.
