The content of low-molecular-weight antioxidants and the activity of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase in seeds of Rumex thyrsiflorus, Plantago major, Tanacetum vulgare, Chamaenerium angustifolium [Epilobium angustifolium], Lappula squarrosa, Melilotus albus [M. alba], Cnidium monnieri, Artemisia vulgaris, Bidens tripartita, Achillea millefolium, Taraxacum sp., Silene repens, Geum sp., Crepis tectorum were studied. The seeds were collected from different climatic regions of Russia: Central Yakutia (Yakutsk), Southern Yakutia (Aldan city, Olyokminsk city), Central Ural (Ekaterinburg city), Central Povolzhje (Yoshkar-Ola city), Central Russia (Ivanovo city) and the Crimea. The peroxidase activity in seeds was low or absent, with the exception of C. monnieri, A. millefolium and M. albus. During the vegetative period under conditions of high temperature and low precipitation (the Crimea and Central Yakutia), the seeds accumulated low-molecular-weight antioxidants. Coefficients of correlation of thelow-molecular-weight antioxidant content were as follows: with the temperature in July, +0.83; with the precipitation number in July, -0.83. High superoxide dismutase activity is the compensation for plants accumulating a small number of low-molecular-weight antioxidants as a consequence of climatic conditions. These phenomena vary seasonally. During the period of low numbers of precipitations and high temperature, increases in low-molecular-weight antioxidant accumulation and/or SOD occur.
