Origin, development, and continuity of academic zoology in Russia

摘要

A brief historical review represents a great importance of Academy of Sciences in developing zoology of our country. The Academy was found on the initiative of Peter the First in St. Petersburg 275 years ago. The author distinguishes six basic stages in developing zoology in Russia and determines their specificity. National scientific schools of zoologists, characteristic objects for study, continuity, and interrelations between academic, institutional, and branch sciences are estimated. The review contains voluminous bibliography, predominantly of the post-revolutionary period.
