The range of salinity tolerance in the White Sea mollusk Hiatella arctica L. and its modification due to the acclimation of this mollusk to extreme salinity conditions were determined for the assessment of the species adaptive capacities. The tolerance range in individuals kept at 25parts per thousand water salinity was 17-36parts per thousand. A shift of the tolerance range in the test organisms was observed due to the one-step acclimation of them to the lower or higher salinity. The potential tolerance range of H. arctica was close to 13-42parts per thousand. The high adaptation abilities of H. arctica are responsible for its wide spreading over the White Sea. The absence of this species in the littoral is related to the specific morphology of its shell.
