Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. developed the new sheet-fed printing press DAIYA-3 H which realized high speed and high printing quality (shock-streakless at 16000 sheets per hour). In order to accomplish the above performance, we used a roll (blanket cylinder) with a built-in dynamic absorber. We performed a fundamental study of the application of a dynamic absorber (of the tuned mass addition system), which is considered to have a simple construction and high level serviceability, to a rotary roll. This dynamic absorber has characteristics that reduce the peaks of transient vibrations immediately after shock application, and that its frequency is comparatively high, about 250 Hz. Its vibration-reducing effect was verified by means of theoretical analysis and experiments, and knowledge required for its practical use has been obtained, which will be described in the following paper.
