The Japanese steel industry has a long history of introducing new and innovative technologies in the field of ironmaking. The new technologies introduced during the past ten years includes ones to use cheaper and lower grade raw materials and fuels, measures to prolong the service life of blast furnaces and coke ovens, promotion of energy saving, use of wastes and solutions to environmental problems.
