An equation proposed by Cooper and Eaton to describe compaction of powders was applied to evaluate green sand compaction behavior. It was shown that green sand compaction consists of two processes namely, particle rearrangement and plastic deformation of clay-water films. A quantitative analysis was carried out through evaluating compaction behavior under the load of pressure. The compaction behavior of several base sands with different average particle sizes and size distribution was examined to verify. applicability of the equation. The research results indicate that the equation is valid in describing, the compaction behavior by quantitatively separating the process into the two specific steps.
